After such auspicious beginnings how did America fall so far? How did a nation which once held a predominantly Christian world view become the torch bearer for secular humanism? Those are just two of the pressing issues Thomas R. Goehle tackles in his new book documenting American’s Post-Christian Apocalypse.
Mr. Goehle takes his readers on an a fascinating and sobering journey which traces the origins of secular humanistic thought back to roots long ago. Working forward Mr. Goehle then follows this secular humanistic “enlightenment” through the modern age documenting its insidious effect on our society.
You’ll be shocked to learn that our early American republic was influenced by many of these early “enlightenment” philosophers, and it was the compromises between these prophets of secularism and the early American Christian world view to which we owe today’s bitter harvest.
Mr. Goehle makes the case that because of these and many more compromises over the past several centuries America has for all intents and purposes become a nation of what he call “practical atheists”. We like the idea of calling ourselves Christian’s but we have become so infected with secular humanism we have lost a true sense of biblical Christianity.
George Santayana, the famous Spanish poet and philosopher wisely observed that “those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it”. In American’s Post-Christian Apocalypse, Thomas Goehle takes you back to our past and shows you where we went wrong so that future generations will be better equipped to deal with the threat secular humanism poses to any society.
In the interest of a fair review I must say that I do not agree with all of the author’s conclusions. Specifically, I disagree with his eschatological framework as it relates to a seven year tribulation and many of the resulting synchronisms. I do indeed share the author’s view that we are rapidly approaching the end of this age and the return of Christ that is ultimately mankind’s only real hope. If the last hundred years of a predominately secular humanistic world view has proven anything it is that mankind has only become more evil and destructive to ourselves and our fellow man.
In conclusion if there is one extra biblical source book you read this year then do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of American’s Post-Christian Apocalypse by Thomas Goehle. I think you’ll find, like me, that it is a valuable resource for understanding the dangers of secular humanism and the devastating effects it has had on our society.
